We have made it to Thanksgiving Break! We had an absolute wonderful week!
The stomach bug unfortunately is going around third grade, despite our vigilant efforts of disinfecting our classroom everyday before we leave. VIP papers were sent home Friday, 11/20. I had my days mixed up on Thursday and thought it was Wednesday. We will continue studying the same content for all subjects when we return from break. Friday we spent time reflecting on when we were thankful for. We turned ourselves into 'thankful turkeys'. Each feather represents something that student is thankful for. (There is a picture below.) As always please email me with any questions or concerns.I hope everyone has a fantastic break! Only one more week until Thanksgiving Break!
Math: You can expect to see the grades posted on the Unit 2 test by Monday (11/16/15) evening. This week we started Unit 3. There will be a quick skills check on Friday. (11/20/15) ELA/Reading: We will continue to read The Lemonade War. We are almost half way through! Ask your student which character they identify with, Jessie or Evan and why. Our grammar focus for the week will be figurative language. Social Studies: We will start our next unit on Government! As always please let me know if you have questions or concerns! Have a great weekend! What a great week! We had such a fabulous time today with our Desktop Stores! Pictures soon to come! :)
General Announcements: VIPs will go home with graded papers next Thursday 11/12/15. Picture retake is Monday 11/9/15. If you would like retakes you need to send back the picture packages. This is also when students will take their pictures if they were absent on the original picture day. For those of you who are trying to make winter break travel plans, our class winter party will be on Wednesday Dec. 16th. When I find out more details I will let everyone know. If you are interested in party planning please contact me! :) Social Studies: Desktop Stores were a success! Pictures soon to come. :) Our Economics test will be Monday 11/9/15. Students should have brought their textbooks and econ folders home. Today we played a review game in class. The students can play at home if they would like and the directions are at the bottom of this post. (I am not sure but I think they will only be able to play once.) Our next social studies unit will cover Government. ELA/Reading: There will be a POV quiz Friday 11/13/15. We will work on POV next week while still reading The Lemonade War. The students are extremely interested in the main characters, Evan and Jessie! Ask your students who their favorite character is right now and why. We use a website called www.noredink.com in class for our grammar quizzes. This is a great website for students to use at home as well for grammar practice. Students should know the focus for the week, but if they forget you can check the ELA webpage on our classroom website. Math: There will be a Math Unit Assessment on Tuesday 11/10/15. This should be written down in your students' agendas. To review the main concepts the assessment will be covering, you can view the Math Unit 2 page on the classroom website. We will start unit 3 next week. You can also view the main concepts for this unit on the Math Unit 3 page on the classroom website. Also not much homework has been given out, this pattern will probably continue for Unit 3. These units are multiplication heavy! It is expected that students should be practicing their math facts at home everyday. Every Friday our class will be monitoring the students' progress. I hope everyone has a great weekend! Hopefully it won't be too rainy. As always, please email me with any questions or concerns! WOW! It has been a great first half of the semester! We had a great Red Ribbon Week too!
VIP papers went home yesterday, please make sure to sign and return. The Progress Skills Checklist will come home today. ELA: We started Lemonade War and the students are LOVING it! We will continue reading this book until the end of the semester. We have 12 copies in our class, if your student would like their own copy they are more than welcome to bring it into class. I just ask that they please, PLEASE do not read ahead. We have some students who have already ready the book (and that is okay!) I just want to keep the ending a surprise for as long as possible. Social Studies: We will continue to study Economics. We focused on chapter 5 in the textbook and next week we will focus on chapter 6. This weekend is a great time to work on the commercials for Desktop Stores. Students can choose to record and play their commercial in class OR they can present it live. Please let me know if you have any questions! As a reminder, Desktop Stores will take place Friday, November 6th. Students need to bring their 10 products and any props or signage for their store. Math: We will continue to work on unit two. This past week we focused on inverse equations and repeated addition to represent multiplication. The students will start having less homework, so please make sure they practicing their multiplication math facts at home. I hope everyone has a spooky and safe Halloween Weekend! As always, please email me with any questions or concerns! The 11th week recap is coming out a little early! I will be out on personal leave this Friday 10/23 and Monday 10/26. I will not be checking my email during this time, so I apologize ahead of time for the delay of response. Please remember to sign and return the report card envelopes. I will send VIPs home next Thursday, 10/29. Don't forget about Desktop Stores! Students can start bringing in the little slips with their product ideas. You will receive an email from me once I receive their slip and approve the idea. Since I am sending home the VIPs next week, you will not receive the recorder form in time to sign and return. There is a digital copy at the bottom of this blog post. Please read to stay informed. Fall Family Fun Day will be this Sunday! Thank you for everyone who donated to the class basket and for our volunteers who are putting it together! Next week we will start The Lemonade War in ELA! Most of the third grade classes will be reading this book and we are super excited! We ask for students to PLEASE not read ahead because we want to stay away from spoilers. This book will also go along with our Economic Unit. We will also focus on types of sentences. In Math we will continue to work on understanding Multiplication and Division Concepts. Red Ribbon Week is next week, 10/26th/15-10/30/15. Student council created themed days in celebration. Our Future is too Bright for Drugs
As always, please email me with any questions or concerns! Have a great weekend!
ITBS is next week. It will last the whole week. 10/19/15-10/23/15. Testing takes SO much out of the students, so there will be no homework. There is no studying required for this test, just please make sure your students have a good night's sleep, eat a healthy breakfast, and arrive to school on time.
Due to testing, next week's schedule will be a little funky. We will only be meeting for Math twice, so we will continue to study using equal groups for division. In ELAR we will continue to work on our grammar focus review project, our writing, and revisiting text features. In S.S. we will continue to study Economics. Our basket theme is "Pamper Me Please"! We are collecting items such as spa supplies, snack stash, popcorn & DVD, gift cards for spas, restaurant, movies, ect. If you would like to donate please turn in your items by Wednesday 10/21/15. If there is a parent that would like to put the items together in a basket please email me! I am also going to start adding more practice resources on the website, so please be on the lookout for those as well. As always, please email me with any questions or concerns! This week was over in a flash! One of my favorite parts of this week was learning longitude and latitude kinetically using our big map rug in our classroom and enjoying the beautiful outside weather after many, many days of rain.
I know many parents want the updates to be about what is to come instead of wheat we did the past week. I hear ya! Our updates will now shift in that direction. I am also going to really try to update the subjects pages of the website with information and resources that are currently being covered in class. I will also try to be more cognizant of entering grades more frequently. Please remember we also use SeeSaw in our classroom. This is an app that is an online portfolio of your student's work that allow parent, student, and teacher to see the student's progress and a peek into what we are studying. Math We took our 3.OA.1 quiz on Friday. Due to the Holiday, Adventures in the Arts Day, and the Hearing and Vision Screenings we will only have two days of Math next week. We will complete remediation on standard 3.OA.1 and focus on 3.OA.2. ELA We will be reviewing all grammar topics and the students will be creating a project of their choice to show what they know. They get to choose from a PowerPoint, Video, Song, Podcast, Book, or creating a board game. Social Studies We took our map skills quiz on Thursday outside! We will now shift and start our next unit on Economics. Upcoming Dates 10/12/15 No School! 10/14/15 Adventure in the Arts Day 10/15/15 Hearing and Vision Screening 10/15/15 VIPs 10/19-23/15 ITBS As always please email me with ANY questions or concerns you have!
